PAUL VAN DYK – GUIDING LIGHT

Como arquiteto de milhões de noites memoráveis ​​e criador de algumas das peças de música eletrônica mais testadas pelo tempo na história do gênero, muitos poderiam ver o próprio Paul como um guia. Para PvD, entretanto, o significado do título não poderia ser mais contrário.

‘From Then On’, ‘Music Rescues Me’ e ‘Guiding Light’ – esses lançamentos pertencem um ao outro, diz Paul. Eu acho que o aspecto da ‘trilogia’ dos meus últimos três álbuns está mais no lado implícito. Nos próximos anos, porém, à medida que forem revisitados, sua natureza “um-dois-três” ficará cada vez mais clara para as pessoas. Esses lançamentos são todos parte do mesmo assunto (e período de tempo) , mas refletem diferentes fases dele. Lidar com o que aconteceu em fevereiro de 2016 (quando van Dyk caiu no palco enquanto se apresentava em Utrecht) teve que ser feito em vários níveis diferentes. ‘From Then On’ era principalmente sobre a recuperação física, enquanto ‘Music Rescues Me’ tinha mais a ver com a reconstrução das habilidades mentais. ‘Guiding Light’, no entanto, é sobre recuperação espiritual – a aceitação do que aconteceu. Se isso não tivesse sido alcançado, diz Paul , acho que conquistar os dois primeiros poderia ter acabado como vitórias vazias. ”

Portanto, ‘Luz Guia’ refere-se inerentemente aos outros e, no maior grau possível, a uma pessoa em particular.

“ Muitas vezes as pessoas me perguntam qual foi a minha primeira memória após o acidente, o que é difícil porque eu realmente não tenho nenhuma. O que eu me lembro – e vividamente – eram sentimentos. A primeira vez que minha esposa segurou minha mão no hospital, tentando me dar o poder de abrir meus olhos é – de alguma forma – um sentimento tão forte, é quase físico. O que eu tive foi aquela impressão de ternura e de amor. Esta foi a minha luz guia – a força que acredito que me deu ânimo e começou a fornecer a força para lutar pelo meu caminho de volta. Em essência, o amor me trouxe de volta – a força da conexão com outra pessoa que – seja qual for o buraco em que você esteja – é sua melhor chance de passar por ele. É essa ‘luz guia’ que se torna uma ‘bússola’ que mostra o caminho e simplesmente não o deixa desistir. Para mim, essa pessoa e conexão era minha esposa.

Para outros, porém, acredito que é o que é mais importante e essencial para você. Então, eu sinto que qualquer que seja a sua circunstância particular (e não tenho dúvidas de que o mundo vai exigir muitas luzes orientadoras no futuro próximo), você tem que olhar na direção de quem ou o que você tem o amor mais forte ” , ele diz.

Através das peças musicais dos álbuns, músicas como ‘Deep Within’, ‘Remedy’, ‘Awakening’, ‘First Contact’, ‘You Found Me’ e – naturalmente – ‘Guiding Light’ falam sobre o espírito e sentimentos que Paul alimentou neles.

Entre suas quatorze faixas, há colaborações com artistas para os quais o próprio Paul foi uma grande inspiração musical. Eugenio Tokarev, Danny Eaton, Kinetica e Elated são apenas alguns dos nomes – mais novos nos reinos trance que deram o salto para co-escrever no dia 10 de PvD.

Também há encontros de produção pela primeira vez com nomes mais estabelecidos. Em ‘Covered In Gold’, PvD e o cantor / compositor inglês Bo Bruce encontraram uma peça que toca perfeitamente as forças artísticas um do outro, entregando um número incomensuravelmente comovente e atemporal. Enquanto isso, com sua faixa-título, Sue McLaren marca a quinta contribuição em tantos álbuns para a longa história de Paul. Em contraste com seu trabalho de estúdio melodicamente drapejado, a música de ‘Guiding Light move-se sem esforço entre a deriva etérea e a mudança emocional da terra.

Há outros retornados do álbum também, com o pianista clássico Vincent Corver de volta para colaborar na abertura do álbum ‘Deep Within’, Saad Ayub encontrando aquela força de fundo novamente em ‘You Found Me’ e Chris Bekker contribuindo para o encerramento do álbum, ‘Velvet Sky ‘.

As the architect of millions of memorable nights and the creator of some of the most time-tested pieces of electronic music in the genre’s history, many could see Paul himself as a guiding light. To PvD however the title’s meaning couldn’t be more contrary.

‘From Then On’, ‘Music Rescues Me’ and ‘Guiding Light’ – these releases belong together, says Paul. I think the ‘trilogy’ aspect of my last three albums is currently more on the implicit side. In years to come though as they’re revisited, their ‘one-two-three’ nature will become evermore clear to people. These releases are all part of the same subject matter (and time period), but reflect different phases of it. Dealing with what happened in February of 2016 (when van Dyk fell through the stage whilst performing in Utrecht) had to be done on a number of different levels. ‘From Then On’ was largely about the physical recovery, while ‘Music Rescues Me’ had more to do with the rebuilding of mental abilities. ‘Guiding Light’ however is about spiritual recuperation – the coming-to-terms with what took place. If that hadn’t been achieved, says Paul, I think conquering the first two might have ended up as hollow victories.”

So ‘Guiding Light’ is inherently about others, and to the greatest possible degree, one person in particular.

“People often ask what my first memory following the accident was, which is tough as I really don’t have one. What I recall though – and vividly – were feelings. The first time my wife held my hand in the hospital, trying to give me the power to open my eyes is – somehow – a feeling so strong, its almost physical. What I had is that impression of warmth and of love. This was my guiding light – the force I believe that gave me spirit and began supplying the strength to fight my way back. In essence love brought me back – the strength of connection to another person that – whatever hole you’re in – is your best chance of making it through. It is that ‘guiding light’ that becomes a ‘compass’ that shows you the way and simply won’t let you give up. For me that person and connection was my wife.

For others though, I believe it’s what’s most essentially & vitally important to you. So I feel whatever your particular circumstance (and I’m in no doubt that the world is going to require a lot of guiding lights in the near future) you have to look in the direction of whoever or whatever you have the strongest love for”, he says.

Through the albums musical pieces, the likes of ‘Deep Within’, ‘Remedy’, ‘Awakening’, ‘First Contact’, ‘You Found Me’ and – naturally – ‘Guiding Light’ speak titular volumes to the spirit & feelings Paul’s fed into them.

Amongst its fourteen tracks there are collaborations with artists for whom Paul has himself been a major musical inspiration to. Eugenio Tokarev, Danny Eaton, Kinetica and Elated are just some of the names – newer to the trance realms that have made the jump to co-write on PvD’s 10th.

There are also first time production encounters with more established names. On ‘Covered In Gold’, PvD and English singer/songwriter Bo Bruce have found a piece that plays flawlessly to each other’s artistic strengths, delivering an immeasurably moving, set-to-be-timeless number. With its title track meanwhile, Sue McLaren marks a fifth contribution in as many albums to Paul’s longplaying history. Set against his midtempo, melodically draped studio work, ‘Guiding Light’s song moves effortlessly between the ethereally drifting and emotionally earth-shifting.

There are other album returnees too, with classical pianist Vincent Corver back to collaborate on album overture ‘Deep Within’, Saad Ayub finding that floor-force again on ‘You Found Me’ and Chris Bekker contributing to the album’s swansong closeout, ‘Velvet Sky’.
